Today young and old are increasingly cared for in isolated age groups. Many children rarely mix with the elderly or less able. Equally, many older people can feel lonely and disconnected from society. There is an increasing move worldwide to house pre-schools within grounds of retirement facilities to enable regular, structured, intergenerational interactions to take place.
In January 2018, CPOA partnered with Twinkles playschool to embark on a pilot project for the intergenerational care concept. This was the first playschool in South Africa to offer intergenerational activities as part of the children’s weekly routine as well as allow for positive interaction with the elderly. They will share the challenges and the positive results of this pilot project.
